Artist Biographies

ZUZI! Dance Company:

Nanette Robinson, choreographer, educator and dancer is ZUZI! Co-Founder and Artistic Director, holds a BFA in Dance from Temple University and is an introductory and ongoing certified instructor of Skinner Releasing.   She has travelled internationally teaching and performing and has extensive experience as an aerial dancer and teacher having worked with Robert Davidson and Terry Sendgraff. Nanette’s choreography has been showcased locally with O-T-O, Zenith Dance Collective, Arts for All, University of Arizona Dance Department, Rick Wamer, “Mythos” Project, NEW ARTiculations, Funhouse Movement Theater, The Tucson Poetry Festival, the ADAA Showcase and the Flagstaff Summer Dance Festival. Nanette is currently teaching at Paolo Freire School, with Mirasol Recovery Treatment Program and ZUZI! School.  She is thrilled to be a part of ZUZI!. It has been her home and artistic toolbox for creating dances,  flying, teaching and working with all levels and ages of dance lovers.

Alison Hart started her dance training as a young child. In 2004 Alison received her BFA in Dance Education from Arizona State University. For 4 years she was the artistic director of the City of Phoenix Parks and Recreation Dance program, teaching classes and choreographing for kids of all ages. Alison is now living in Tucson and is currently teaching dance at Utterback Middle School and also co-directs ZUZI! Many Limbs Youth Aerial Company.

 

Beth Braun ZUZI! Associate Artistic Director has been performing professionally and teaching since 1982 in Tucson, throughout Arizona, in New York, California, and internationally. Originally from New York, Beth received her MA Degree in Dance from State University of New York at Brockport and has studied at the Alvin Ailey Contemporary Dance Center. Beth has worked with just about every modern company in Tucson, starting back with Territory Dance Theatre, and while in NY she worked with Randy James Danceworks for their first season. She has taught every age student from 13 month old babies to 60 year old differently abled adults. Currently Beth directs the dance program at Rincon/University High School. Beside her work with ZUZI!, Beth created and produced her own work with musician/composer/husband, Arthur Miscione. Beth was the 2005 recipient of the Buffalo Exchange Arts Award.  

Scott Bird began dancing when he was 30 and has been exploring aerial dance, contact improvisation and modern dance with ZUZI! for more than ten years.  After years as a tile contractor, yoga teacher and massage therapist, Scott is now a program director for a study abroad program in China and an installation manager for a local tensile fabric sculpture company.  Scott has a daughter entering teenage years and lives in the Sonora Cohousing community.”

 

Sarah Anderson Stewart graduated summa cum laude at Arizona State University in 2004 and was the recipient of the Herberger College of Fine Arts Distinguished Graduate Award and the Outstanding Dance Educator Award.  At ASU Sara performed with Dance Arizona Repertory Theater (DART), and in over a dozen works choreographed by ASU faculty, students, and guest artists Vicki Schick and Yvonne Rainer.  Apart from ASU Sara performed in Phoenix and Minneapolis with GGG Dance Company.  In spring 2008, Sara finished her fourth year directing the dance program at Skyline High School and made the move to Tucson, her native home.  Sara is thrilled to be home, dancing, choreographing and teaching with the ZUZI! Community and teaching at Tolson Elementary as an OMA (Opening Minds through the Arts) Arts Integrative Specialist.

 

Karyn Reim is a manual physical therapist, holding a doctorate of physical therapy from University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences.  She is also a graduate of Shenandoah University where she earned her BFA and BA in dance performance and choreography.  Karyn has been a featured performer in national venues including St. Mark’s Church in NYC, Ohrstrom-Bryant Theater in Winchester, VA, and Wayside Theater in Middletown, VA.  She has also presented her choreography at Joy of Motion’s, Jack Guidone Theater in Washington D.C. for which she received a favorable review in The Washington Post.

Maria Sara Villa is a mom, wife, birth doula and a certified Feldenkrais® Practitioner. She combines her love of dance and work supporting the pregnant family to help people move with more ease and grace.

Audrey Copeland is a sophomore at the University of Arizona studying Biology and Anthropology.  This is her third season with ZUZI! and her first season in the professional company.  She is so excited to have found a community of such unique artists and wonderful people!  On her free time, Audrey enjoys playing the cello, rock climbing and hiking, and reading good books!

Sarah Small has been dancing since she took her first dance class at her middle school. She has trained at a variety of studios in the Tucson area, as well as participating in the dance programs at her middle school and high school. Sarah spent a year studying dance technique in Irvine, California and finished up her BFA in dance performance at Arizona State University (ASU). While at ASU she performed with Dance Arizona Repertory Theatre (DART) and finished her degree with a senior solo choreographed by Jennifer Tsukayama. Sarah has also been involved in dance education and is currently teaching dance at Utterback Middle School.

Mirela Roza  began her study of ballet at the age of four in Fortaleza, Brazil with Monica. Mirela performed professionally with the Municipal Theatre Ballet in Rio de Janeiro. After performing as a professional ballerina after 4 seasons with Municipal Theatre she ran away with the circus, Ringling Bros & Barnum and Bailey.  She performed as a dancer and gave regular dance class to the performers of the circus from 2002-2006.  She met and married an American musician in the Circus and now resides in Tucson with her husband, and their three year old son.  She is currently teaching a creative movement class for adults with special needs at the University of Arizona, performs with ZUZI! and is a substitute teacher at Academy of Ballet and Tucson Regional Ballet.
